This piece was derived from data I collected over the course of one month.
I realized that throughout each day I was repeating many activities. I found I was able to categorize all my daily activities into 13 specific areas, such as activities surrounding the topics of sitting, talking, sleeping, food consumption, hygiene, driving, walking, leisure, etc.
With this project I wanted to tap into these activities and daily patterns and create art from them. In essence, make art as a result of living. I wore the Data Collection Device for 30 days and beginning March 1 I timed all these separate activities and documented the results in an Excel spreadsheet.
For example, if I was sitting, while eating a sandwich, and talking to a friend, the food consumption, sitting, and talking stopwatch would be timing the event. When I finished the sandwich I stopped the food consumption stopwatch, but if I was still sitting, the sitting stopwatch would still be active.
After the 30 day month was over, using the data I entered into Excel spreadsheets I created point graphs for each category. For this installation, using a steel frame hung from the ceiling, 403 1" dia. steel ball bearings, and fishing line, I recreated each point graph three-dimensionally, replicating the position of each point on the graph by hanging a steel ball at that exact position relative to the floor as my baseline. Each 2D point graph was framed and position inline with each 3D graph for reference.
